Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
“Although we are not separate, we are not the same.” - Sebene Selassie
Individually and organizationally, the MTTA trainers commit to supporting MBSR teacher formation that recognizes the stressors and addresses the biases towards underrepresented groups associated with gender, race, culture, sexual orientation, and differing abilities.
In particular, deepening our own understanding of issues of diversity and the way racial conditioning in the United States affects all of us — both as individuals and in relationship to the institutions of which we are a part, is key. This includes those institutions involved in teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and training MBSR teachers. We acknowledge that at this point, the MTTA is composed of only white teacher trainers. We recognize that the MBSR teaching community and participants in MBSR classes are predominantly white. We are dedicated to increasing the accessibility of the MBSR Teacher Training pathway to the BIPOC community and to continuing to explore ways to make our teacher training programs and course offerings more inclusive and welcoming of all.
As mindfulness practitioners we see this investigation as part of our practice and not separate from it. We practice to see more clearly, dispelling the delusions of race and othering… we invite you to join us.
